Ivano-Frankivsk was founded in 1662 named town of Stanislawow or Stanislav. When Poland first split in 1772 the city was held by Austria until 1919. It was reunited with the Ukrainian Socialist Republic in 1939 and renamed to Ivano-Frankivsk in 1962, named after the great writer, poet, journalist and philosopher Ivan Franko. When the Ukraine gained its long awaited independence in 1991 yellow and blue flags were hoisted above the town hall. The city?s main industries are timber, engineering, furniture food processing and a developing chemical industry. Ivano-Frankivsk is also an important highway and railway junction.
